On May 7th, municipalities across Northern California gathered for a much-anticipated CEU training day, organized by the Maintenance Superintendence Association Redwood Empire Chapter(MSA). This event was truly remarkable, packed with insightful sessions, impressive equipment displays, and invaluable networking opportunities.
The training day provided a unique mix of education and community interaction, where participants could earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs) specifically for water and sewer management. With 80 professionals attending, the atmosphere was vibrant and filled with opportunities for learning and camaraderie.

Collaboration and Learning
The training day also featured a collaborative effort between the American Public Works Association (APWA) and the Redwood Empire MSA. This partnership deepened the discussions and resources available to attendees, showcasing a collective commitment to enhancing public works services in the region.
A standout session was conducted by Brian Brown from Clear Source, who discussed securing grant funding for improvement projects. His class provided participants with practical strategies, such as identifying funding sources and crafting effective grant proposals. With municipalities struggling to fund essential projects, this knowledge is invaluable for enhancing local infrastructure and services.
Inspiring Connections
One of the day's highlights was a special guest appearance by past president Charlie Lachman. He shared valuable insights, strengthening the bond between past and current leaders. Charlie’s participation in a President's Photo emphasized the importance of mentorship and inspired attendees to consider leadership roles within the organization. This kind of engagement fosters a sense of unity and purpose within public works.

Community Celebration
The event was not only educational but also a celebration of community spirit. Attendees enjoyed delicious tacos, enriching the festive atmosphere and promoting inclusivity. Exciting prizes and raffles kept the energy high, ensuring that everyone felt they were part of something special.
Looking ahead, the Redwood Empire MSA is eager to recruit volunteers and scholarship applicants for their upcoming 2025 MSA Scholarship Program. This initiative aims to empower individuals in public works, providing educational opportunities that enhance professional development and community service.
In a proactive measure to promote the field, the Redwood Empire chapter introduced a Public Works First Responder shirt. Available for purchase at the upcoming Equipment Show and Roadeo on July 12th, 2025, all proceeds will benefit community projects and enhance the visibility of the public works profession.

The Impact of Training
Events like the CEU training day embody the spirit of collaboration and ongoing education crucial for the growth of public service professionals. They provide a platform for municipal employees to learn, share, and acquire new skills that have a direct impact on their communities.
As the day wrapped up, attendees departed not only with certificates but also with a renewed sense of purpose and connection to their community. The Redwood Empire MSA’s efforts ensure that public works professionals have the skills they need, backed by a robust support network.

The MSA Redwood Empire Chapter May Symposium Training Day was a notable success, filled with enriching experiences, inspiring connections, and active community engagement. The Redwood Empire MSA continues to play a vital role in developing and promoting the public works profession in the region.
